No matter what poker variations and limits you play, your bankroll is always going to serve as the backbone for every game, every tournament, every hand, and every move you make. Without a bankroll, your poker fun would not be possible, and without proper bankroll management skills and knowledge, poker would likely be neither fun nor possible for long. Likewise, managing your bankroll wisely and effectively is essential in becoming a winning poker player and ensuring long-term gains that reflect your proficiency of the game.
Many players overlook proper bankroll management strategies in going about their learning and advancement of poker skills, focusing instead on what to do at the table with the cards you're dealt. Choosing a table in the first place is equally as important, if not more. In this section we'll walk you through how to build an initial bankroll, how to choose the appropriate games for your funds, and how to manage your wins and losses over the long run to overcome the swings of good and bad luck, becoming a bonafide winning poker player.
~ Bankroll Management Overview - General summary of the items listed below.
What Is A Bankroll? - The better question actually is what should a bankroll be? Ideally your bankroll is going to come from available funds that are completely negligible, money that you don't particularly need. Your bankroll should be entirely separate from rent money, food money, savings, general cash on hand, etc. Its purpose is for poker and for poker only... [continue]
Playing Within Your Limits - So how do you know what levels and limits of play are right for you? That is the age old question, whether you're looking to play a certain game and want to create the bankroll for it, or you already have the bankroll and want to know what you can do with it... [continue]
Moving Up In Limits - Once you've been playing for a fair amount of time and have hopefully been seeing a steady increase in the size of your bankroll, you may start to think about making the move up to the next level. This might be moving from $5 tournaments to $10 tournaments, from $1/2 limit tables to $2/4 limit tables... [continue]
Managing Your Bankroll - Throughout your poker experiences it's always a wise choice to keep track of your stats. You might think of this just in terms of how you're playing at the tables. For example, how many flops am I seeing? What percentage of showdowns do I win? What hands am I getting the most value out of... [continue]
Managing A Split Bankroll - With the inseption of online poker it is a lot more common these days to find players with portions of their bankroll scattered about, although not in the way that Matt Damon had his funds scattered about in different hiding spots in the movie Rounders... [continue]

There's nothing good about this subject matter, but table rakes and fees are a reality of poker pretty much anywhere you go, and they are something that every poker player needs to understand in order to be a winning player. Even very good players that know they can beat any other player at the table have to ask themselves the question "can I beat the rake here?" Basically the question at hand is whether or not a game is going to be profitable over the long run, assuming that everything regarding your actual poker game is spot on. Rakes and fees can be a complete nuisance, especially when you find out just how much they bite into your bankroll, but there are things you can do to minimize their impact.
~ Rakes & Fees Overview - General summary of the items listed below.
Reasonable Rakes And Fees In Online Poker - It's easy not to think too much about rakes and fees, especially when playing poker online. Most of the time you'll barely notice the dollars and cents being snuck away out of every pot that you drag in, and when you're signing up for a tournament you're more likely going to be eying up the 1st place prize... [continue]
Overhead In The Live Poker Market - When it comes to paying the piper in poker rakes and fees, there are key differences in the associated costs of live versus online play. We've already hit on the basic costs of online poker, which you should find the same range of in live play. The only exception here would be in home games where no rakes or fees are taken... [continue]
Rakeback And Bonus Incentives - In the world of online poker, you'll often run across all sorts of bonus programs and promotions, geared at encouraging action. Some of these offers may seem gimmicky and complicated, but for the most part they are great opportunities to boost your bankroll, and in the end, all parties involved can benefit... [continue]

Overabundance is a word that comes to mind when thinking of the explosion of online poker and all of the sites that have opened up to claim their piece of the popular and profitable pie. Basically think of any word in the English language (and even some that are not), combine it with the word "poker," and there's probably a 99% chance that there's already an online poker room for it. Our task here at ZipRake.com is to sort through the good, the bad, and the ugly for you, the wise poker consumer, and to present you with the best options out there. We'd also like to hear what you have to say about the sites listed below, so feel free to email us with your own reviews at ziprake@gmail.com and we'll post whatever you have to say as long as it's reasoned and coherent.
~ Online Poker Rooms Overview - List and comparisons of the sites listed below and more.
Full Tilt Poker - Although relatively new to the online poker scene, arriving in July of 2004, Full Tilt Poker splashed into the pot, growing rapidly thanks to a strong backing of assorted poker professionals. Log into the lobby and you're likely to find the likes of Phil Ivey, John Juanda, Mike Matusow, and a long list of other infamous players, all of which are highlighted at rooms in red text. Even if you're not in the mood for playing yourself, it can be entertaining to kick back and watch amateur high rollers tussle with the pros in $50/$100 NL Hold'em or $1000/$2000 Stud games.
Poker Stars - Currently toting one of the highest player traffic rates for online poker rooms, Poker Stars has established itself as a leader in the industry. The large population of players guarantees that players of all types and levels will be able to find a suitable cash table or tournament to their liking, and can rely on the trustworthy support team for any problems they may have.
Absolute Poker - As one of the medium-sized online poker rooms out there, Absolute Poker certainly holds its own. They offer a wide range of limits, as well as a good amount of tables and tournaments to choose from. Bonus offers and other promotions are plentiful, and fairly easy to clear unlike the almost too-good-to-be-true offers that some other rooms offer.
True Poker - As a relatively new online poker room, True Poker tried to establish itself as an innovator by introducing one of the first "3D" table views, featuring an array of differently moving and speaking characters to choose from. The graphics are nice, as long as you're not overstimulated by the flashiness, in which case you're out of luck as this is the only available table option. The software in general is fully functional, though not as sharp as easy to maneuver around as some other sites.

A lot has changed since the passage of the Safe Ports Act in the summer of 2006, a U.S. law that carried a tiny little last-minute piece of legislation that drastically changed, not only the game of poker here in America, but the entire online and international gaming scene. Many online poker rooms closed their gates completely to U.S. players, suffering giant losses while other offshore businesses refused to be intimidated by the new law, which primarily targets domestic vendors (i.e. credit card banks). Despite the restrictions, both live and online poker continue to thrive in the U.S., and much headway has been made to restore the liberties that U.S. skill gamers once had. For more information and insight on the entire mess, as well as on what you can do to help, check out some of the following links:
Poker Players Alliance - Most likely the largest affiliation of U.S. poker advocates. A very active and organized group that continues to grow in size and influence.
Wikipedia: SAFE Port Act - Background information on the SAFE Port Act that includes the anti-gambling legislation that severely crippled online poker in the U.S.
